Before the wall came down it was next to impossible to get vinyl behind the Iron Curtain Instead of jaming to approved Soviet folk music the ingenious DJ’s taped music any which way and started to cut & splice sets together (literally).
Not only that, some DJ’s started to cut it up live on tape machines.
I remember seeing a video of a guy DJ’ing with tape back in the 80’s. He had a small loop held against one tape head with his thumb (drum loop) while cutting up the other… couldn’t find that video online but Youtube came up with another.
Mr.Tape shows us how they used to rock it, Latvian style.
